National Night Out

 nationalnightou

National Night Out (NNO) is an annual community event designed to strengthen the police/community relationship and generate support for anti-crime programs. The goal is to build a healthier, safer city for everyone. NNO was started by the National Association of Town Watch in 1984 and is held on the first Tuesday of August.

In 2014, the NNO campaign included citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from more than 16,124 communities in all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. In all, more than 37.8 million people participated in the program. The Lakeland Police Department registered 87 parties throughout the community, with approximately 6500 people attending these.

In Lakeland, the night is an opportunity to discuss current challenges within neighborhoods and to rededicate efforts to strengthen the community. The citizens and police become acquainted, they share common goals and recommit to work together to ensure success.

Neighborhood block parties are an ideal way for neighbors to get to know each other. Along with block parties, displays of outdoor lights and front-porch gatherings, neighborhoods and communities celebrate National Night Out with a variety of activities:

•  Cookouts
•  Visits from local police, fire departments and commission members
•  Contests
•  Youth activities

If you and your neighbors are planning National Night Out activities, you can register to participate in the August 4, 2015, event.

Lakeland,  Florida – At approximately 8:52 am, on Friday, July 31, 2015, Polk County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a residence on Crystal Hills Loop South, Lakeland, after receiving a call about a female being found unresponsive at the home.

Emergency medical services arrived and determined 43-year-old Angela Honeycutt, who lived at the residence with her adult daughter, was deceased. Polk County Sheriff’s Office Homicide detectives arrived and assumed the investigation.

During the investigation, another call was received about a suspicious vehicle, a black Jeep Wrangler, located a mile away in an industrial area of Reynolds Road. Deputies arrived and located 48-year-old Nancy Vicente, Black Birch Trail, Mulberry, on the ground with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. She was transported to Lakeland Regional Health Center where she is listed in critical condition.

Through the investigation detectives learned Honeycutt had been in an intermittent romantic relationship with Vincente, and that Vincente had spent the night at the Crystal Hills Loop South residence on Thursday, July 30th.

When family members awoke Friday morning, Vincente and her Jeep were gone, and Honeycutt was found in her bed, deceased with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the head. An autopsy will confirm the cause and manner of death.

At this time, evidence and witness statements suggest Vincente shot Honeycutt then left the scene and attempted suicide.

The investigation is ongoing.
